California Architecture Awards

by ArchitectureWeek

At the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles in June, the American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) handed out its annual citations to architects and allied professionals.

Six honor awards and nine merit awards were presented to recent projects, celebrating design excellence among the state's practitioners.

The AIACC also took the opportunity to present its 25-Year Award to the Bailey House in Los Angeles by Pierre Koenig, FAIA. This honor recognizes a California project, at leaset 25 years old, that has "retained its central form and character, with the architectural integrity of the project intact."

The Bailey House is also known as Case Study House #21, one of Koenig's demonstrations of the use of steel and industrial construction techniques to create elegant effects in residential design. "Timeless and enduring," the jury said, "is what makes this project well deserving of the award."

The Maybeck Award, which honors individual California AIA architects for "outstanding achievement in producing consistently distinguished design" went to Craig Hartman, FAIA, of Skidmore Owings & Merrill, San Francisco. As a design partner in the large firm, he is honored for his attention to artistic detail in projects of any size.

The Firm Award, which honors the body of work that a firm has produced over a period of 10 years or more, went to R.L. Binder, FAIA Architecture and Planning. The woman-owned firm has been dedicated, for over 20 years, to hands-on problem solving and community service.
