INCHEON AIRPORT OPENS NEW GATE TO ASIA

The world's newest international airport is also one of its largest. At over two million square feet (185,000 square meters), Incheon Airport brings South Korea closer to the rest of the world. This is the creation of Fentress Bradburn Architects of Denver, Colorado in association with Korean Architects Collaborative International. In the main terminal, natural light penetrates the vast interior spaces through extensive skylights and canted curtain walls. The exposed structure celebrates traditional Korean industries like shipping and steel production. Next week, ArchitectureWeek contributing editor Clair Enlow will take us on a tour of this example of high-tech environmentalism.

practical initiatives that engage students through a combination of multimedia instruction, field experiments, computer-based analysis, and hands-on activities. This level of interaction poses special challenges for school architects who must design multipurpose laboratories that both foster creativity and ensure safety. Next week we'll explore some lessons learned by Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc., which they've compiled in the book, Middle Schools: Shaping the Future.

    SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF GUGGENHEIMS

Just when you thought the media culture couldn't get any more juiced about Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Museum in New York delivers a watermelon for the summer. The exhibit, "Frank Gehry, Architect" has opened at Frank Lloyd Wright's marvel on Fifth Avenue and continues through the long, hot summer. Like Wright, Gehry has both admirers and detractors. Will this exhibit show him as tireless master of invention? Or image-maker for the rich and powerful? Next week, join ArchitectureWeek contributing editor Michael J. Crosbie as he hikes up the spiral ramp to find out.
