Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #48
Question
Where and why would you add air-entraining (AE) agents to concrete?
Answer
AE admixtures preserve and stabilize the air voids generated during concrete mixing. These agents are used in concrete destined for outside use and, with the correct amount of air (5 to 7 percent) in concrete, significantly enhance its freeze/thaw durability and reduce the potential for concrete scaling.
