Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #34
Question
Between 1505 and 1605 the Old Basilica of Saint Peters in Rome was rebuilt. During that 100-year period nearly every notable Roman architect was involved. Which two famous architects were most influential?
Answer
Bramante established a centralized, Greek cross plan. Michelangelo is responsible for the dome and fine detailing. Raphael, Sangallo, and della Porta did some design work at various times. The colonnaded piazza was done 50 years later by Bermini.
