    AIA ANNOUNCES HIGHEST HONORS

    The American Institute of Architects has just announced its 2001 awards, which it has bestowed on an architect, a firm, and an educator. These awards are decided on the basis of the recipients' depth and breadth of influence on the profession of architecture.

    SEATTLE CELEBRATES ARCHITECTURE WEEK

    For twelve days in November, Seattle enjoyed its annual opportunity to reach out to other design disciplines, construction groups, and children, to bring them together under the umbrella of architecture.

    The celebration called Architecture Week, (no relation to ArchitectureWeek, the magazine) was a cluster of events leading up to the AIA Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture, held at Benaroya Hall.

    BEST OF THE WEST

    If you're looking for some of the best in design that North American architecture has to offer, heed Horace Greeley's advice to "Go West!"

    The winners of the Western International Design Awards, 17 in all, display a breadth of approaches, many with acute sensitivity to the regional flavor and people of their locale. The awards were announced at the American Institute of Architects' Western International Summit a few weeks ago in Sun Valley, Idaho.

    CALATRAVA RECOGNIZED

    Santiago Calatrava, the renowned Spanish engineer, architect and artist, has received the 2000 Algur H. Meadows Award for Excellence in the Arts. The award was presented in November at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

    Calatrava has gained an international reputation for integrating technology and aesthetics, producing dynamic structural forms that challenge traditional practice in both architecture and engineering.
