    Bentley User Conference 2000

    by ArchitectureWeek

The Bentley Systems annual international user conference was recently held in Philadelphia. The 2,500-attendee conference was an opportunity to celebrate professionals and firms who have demonstrated the best that can be done with Bentley products, and to educate users about new and upcoming applications.

Bentley Systems, Inc. is the developer of MicroStation/J and other computer applications for architectural and engineering design and operations.

The "2000 Success Awards" were given in 15 categories to acknowledge excellence in applying these systems, not only in architecture and engineering, but also in information management and Web-based collaboration in the disciplines of plant design, transportation, facilities management, government, telecommunications, and utilities.

The winner in architecture was Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates, for the Washington Convention Center. The excellence award for transportation design and engineering went to Busby + Associates Architects Ltd. for the Brentwood Station Skytrain of Vancouver's Rapid Transit Project. Moody/Nolan Ltd., Inc. won the visualization award for the Worthington Recreation Center.

The award for Facility Information Management went to the Sydney Organizing Committee for the just-completed Olympic Games for its use of Bentley software to manage space in the Olympic Village.

    Key Words of Advice

The user conference was punctuated by keynote addresses by several luminaries. J. Parrish of Ove Arup, explained his firm's paper-free concept design of Stadium Australia, the main stadium for the Summer Olympics. And decorated British architect Norman Foster described several of his projects in an address covered in detail in an earlier issue of ArchitectureWeek.
